ORCHIDS - DISEASES
Orchids are vulnerable to diseases just like any living thing. They come in several forms which we will outline here:
Viruses
There are over 25 known viruses that can infect orchids. The Cymbidium mosaic virus and Odontoglossum ringspot virus are two examples.
A healthy orchid with proper sunlight water and feeding, can fight off most infections without intervention, but if the orchid begins to show the symptons, it's time to take action! Yellow or Brown Spots especially appearing in rings or Brown streaks or discoloration on the orchid's petals are both signs of disease.
To treat the disease, Isolation and Quick Treatment are important. Treat with alcohol swabbing or a simple soak in 10% bleach solution for a few seconds. This can be the quickest and most effective solution. Cut off injured parts and inspect the rest of the plant.
Fungus Infections
Fungus diseases are caused by too much moisture whether that is too high humidity or too much water under the plant. Dropping temperatures at night compounded with the high humidity throughout the day also quicken the growth of fungus on orchids. Keep the temperature at 65 degrees or above at night will help. Provide air flow and mild drying out between waterings.
Gloeosporium is a common and troublesome fungus producing yellow spots that "grow together" into a large brown spot. Always isolate the infected plant and remove infected areas. Remember to treat the rest of the plant.
Bacteria Diseases
Bacteria such as Phytomonas Cypripedii causes brown rot. Always use clean tools and gloves (cleaned in bleach) to prevent all spreading diseases.
In some cases, the best advice is to know when to give up and simply try again. Remember to disinfect all pots, tools and such after disposing of the plant. With careful attention before the problem gets serious, you and your orchid will remain relatively disease free for years to come!
